“Your baby must be cold!” – Comic

“Your baby must be cold!” – Comic

It is this time of the year again. Winter. Winter always is a hard time and I am glad when it’s over (having no heating you know). But since we had a baby winter has become more difficult on a different level.

Even before Sophie was born I was confronted with lots of unsolicited advice, but now it’s a new world. Everyone we meet feels the need to help me in raising my own baby. Winter is the time when you will have every neighbour, every shop clerk, even the guard in front of your community, commenting on your babys dress code.

As a first time mom it is hard enough to know for sure what you are doing is right and you are not harming your child. But now I am questioning my ability to dress baby properly every single time I leave the house.

After a few weeks I have learned, no matter how much you make your baby wear, there will always be someone saying “Your baby must be cold”. I have come to realise that in many cases it’s just another way to make small talk. Also most people think baby must be cold if she is seemingly dressed thin. Most babies are dressed in so thick clothes they look like Michelins. The difference is the material we tend to use. While I prefer light but warm materials like down feather and wool the older generation (which is mostly taking care of their grandchildren) has never really heard of those or simply has no access to such baby clothes.

At the end of the day, no matter what I do, they will comment. So the best choice of action is: Smile, and ignore.

PS: Sorry for the bad quality of the comic. I have no scanner at the moment, but promise to get one for the next ones.

  2. 我们这边的路人也是这样的,其实你不要太当回事,这可能就是中国人和人打招呼的特殊方式,就和喜欢问你吃饭了吗一个道理。给宝宝穿太多反而不好,宝宝冷不冷父母更清楚。
